TIVOLI

| | TrackBacks (0)

Tuna -Japanese food culture-

| | TrackBacks (0)

I came across a huge tuna on a street.

101222_115603.JPG

It took nine men to carry it in a restarant.

It weighs 305 kg!!

It took three men to cut it. They cut it with a saw-edged knife.

101222_121200.JPG

101222_122036.JPG

filleted

It is said that tuna is one of the most popular fish among Japanese.

101222_122357.JPG

We eat left-over flesh on the spine of a fish called Nakaochi in Japanese.

101222_125402 (1).JPG

Tekkamaki, far right, is vinegared rice rolled in a sheet of dried laver with Nakaochi.

By the way, do you know how much top bidder paid for tuna at first auction of this year?

About 16 million yen!! (232.6 kg)

FYI, the top bidder is Hong Konger who bought it along with an established sushi shop in Japan.

Japanese culture: Hatsumōde

| | TrackBacks (0)

Hatsumōde (初詣, hatsumōde) is the first shrine visit of the New Year in Japan. Some people visit a Buddhist temple instead. Many visit on the first, second, or third day of the year as most are off work on those days.

A common custom during hatsumōde is to buy a written oracle called omikuji. If your omikuji predicts bad luck you can tie it onto a tree on the shrine grounds, in the hope that its prediction will not come true. The omikuji goes into detail, and tells you how you will do in various areas in your life, such and business and love, for that year. Often a good-luck charm comes with the omikuji when you buy it, that will summon good luck and money your way.

Did you know the Santa Claus is chased every year, and it is shown overnight on Christmas Eve!

NORAD chases the present location of Santa Claus and the arrival estimate time all over the of the world!

With the latest facilities!!

Why the chase of Santa Claus began?

It seems like one wrong telephone call to NORAD from kid.

"I want to talk with Santa"

Colonel who received a telephone don't wont  to disturb the dream of the child,

"Santa seems to have gone to the south from the North Pole"

He answered.

It was an opportunity that a child was pleased with the answer and came to chase Santa Claus.

It is the wonderful story with full of dream.

Please find place of Santa Claus in your country tonight.

More Likely X-mas, less likely birthday

| | TrackBacks (0)

In Japan, we are accustomed with cerebrating Christmas,
mainly as the day of merry party, not as the day of praying.
Because, most of us are not Christians.
So, Christmas day is NOT a national holiday, of course.

But 23rd of December is a National Holiday of Japan.
This day is our Emperor's Birthday. The birthday of our current Emperor.
Yes.
His Majesty's birthday is conveniently (or inconveniently) close to Christmas.
And so...

imagesCAD3GT83.jpg

The day becomes de facto Christmas event day in Japan.
Many of Christmas parties and events are hold on 23rd of December,
not on 24th nor 25th of December.

Most of us, the Japanese people consider it is lucky to have a national holiday near real Christmas day,
without a doubt.
But I am not sure His Majesty Himself thinks it lucky. :-p

Autumn leaf in Tokyo

Hagoita Market

| | TrackBacks (0)

On 17th, 18th and 19th of December, in Senso-ji temple at Asakusa, Hagoita Market opens.

Hagoita is a kind of racquets used for playing Hanetsuki, a Japanese traditional game which is similar to badminton but lacks a net.

The beginning of Hanetsuki was not a simple playing but a Shinto ritual for girls, and so its tools are decorated with auspicious signs and symbols.

Gradually, hagoita itself becomes an auspicious decoration.

hagoita2.jpg

How about going to the Hagoita Market and getting a Hagoita as your lucky charm?

Many kinds of hagoitas are available at Hagoita Market.

hagoita1.jpg

Of course, some of them are actually usable for Hanetsuki games, like this one.

We held a off line meeting yesterday at Sakura Cafe Hatagaya.

I was on duty and drank water.

They tried our new dessert menu too.

Upper one is Cramel Nuts Paratha (Indian flat-read) and the other one is Strawberry&Chocolate Cream Paratha. Strawberry&Chocolate is more popular than Caramel Nuts among them.

counter.JPG
We talked a lot over beer (over water for me).

I'd just like to share the most impressive story.
Korean woman (one of participants) was taught one Japanese sentence "Hitomebore shimashita" as a greeting only for men by her friend when she began to study japanese.

Do you know what "Hitomebore shimashita" means?
It means that "it's love at first sight with you".
She used it a lot till she realized the real meaning of it.

Do you study Japanese? Do you have a Japanese friend?
If so, do you remember what is the first sentence you learn by your kind friend?
