March 2010 Archives

Hanami 2010

| | TrackBacks (0)

In the 7 degrees C, cold cloudy weather...

Sakura (our staff) had been there since 8 am to secure space for Hanami party.I bet she seemed like homeless people on big blue picnic sheet with tons of blanket, with no make-up.Thank you Sakura.

By the time we arrived at 10 AM, there were full of people already to start partying all over the park.

5612689135_c4cc94cc3d_m.jpg

Between April 1st to this weekend will be the best time to visit parks to see them.

I frequently got questioined why most-of-time polite and quiet, kind Japanese people going like this  ↓ at Hanami season as I saw many of them yeaterday.

5612689731_7ddee5afc3_m.jpg

In Japan, the spring is Depareture, Farewell, New starting season, and cherry blossam remind us that. So at hanami party, Japanese outburst their emotion with little bit of alcohol, I guess.

Well people, if you go for a walk and find people like ↑ under the cherry blossam tree,  leave them alone. In an hour, if you still see them with no sign of moving, call medical assistance.

I tried entertaining myself at geisha parties:)

It is said that there is toilet only for men at long-established Japanese restaurant because geisha parties is the entertainment for men. But these days women can enjoy geisha parties as well.

The geishas I met wore black kimonos with crests (New Year's style).

They dance well, play Japanese instruments well, and entertain their guests and their talk is interesting.

They are best entertainers!!

To my surprise, the geisha in the picture below (right side) is a man!!
His name is Eitaro Matumoto. Very beautiful.

Cherry blossoms in Tokyo

| | TrackBacks (0)

Yesterday, on 22th of March, Japan Meteorological Agency announced the start of cherry blossoms blooming in Tokyo.

Yes, we Japanese love cherry blossoms very much and so govermental agency is expected to forecast and announce its blooming date!

Their full blooming will come in a week or ten days.

For those who travel in this Easter holidays in Tokyo, seeing cherry blossoms in a park is highly recommended.

Not only you can see beautiful flowers but also how Japanese enjoy these fragile blossoms.

Strong winds or heavy rain easily scatter their pale pink petals.

Perhapse, because they are beautiful and transient, we cannot but love them.

In Japanese, it was over one thousand years before the word "flower" came to mean cherry blossam.

sakura.jpg

Do you like to create only-one handmade craft for yourself??

I like it!

As Hirotaka wrote the information, we held a workshop to make a Japanese Handmade craft, and watch&listen a Shamisen parformance on March 20th,2010↓

ストラップhandicraft.jpg

8 foreign guests, joined this workshop, and they become good creaters!

They can choose the design of cloth, color of sred and string, and beads for theirselves.

I assisted the guests when they get in a bind.

Shogo (rightside in this picture) translated teacher's explanation from JP into EN.

Of course, I assist the guests, too.

After the workshop, we took a break with Japanese cake and drinks.

They ordered Café menu (including original drink of Sakura Café !)

cafe 002.jpg

It was warm today. So was last Saturday. It's time that cherry blossom starts to bloom.

By the way, today (20th March) is the day for LP (Long-Playing record). It commemorates the first LPs were sold in Japan on this day in 1951.

Come to think of it, the first LP I listened to is PLEASE PLEASE ME by The Beatles. I listened to it at my friend's house when I was a junior high school student. His brother bought it as souvenir when he stopped in London or something. He visited there in the course of a practical training for distant cruise.

Now, we don't have machine for putting on a record. Now, we cannot find LPs at the CD shops with some exceptions (specialized stores). Even so, I tend to call them as record stores.

At Sakura Cafe Hatagaya, there is a LP along with a guitar and a piano, but the sound coming from a speaker is the voice of the radio not LP.

SUMIDA RIVER

A popular hanami spot for locals with approximately 1000 blooming cherry blossom trees planted in a row along the Sumida River.

The 8th Tokugawa Shogun opened this area to the public so they could enjoy Hanami, and it is a place with long and distinguished history. This place is very close to Asakusa, thus you will enjoy the taste of lively down town culture, and experience the magnificence of cherry blossoms. .

Flowery days

| | TrackBacks (0)

Now in Japan, we are in the midst of flowery days.

Sounds good?

Unfortunately, reality is not so good.

The "Flower" I mention is of Japanese cidar.

花粉_1~1.JPG

The problem is its pollen.

Long resitents in Japan often develop allergy to this cidar pollen, a kind of hay fever.

Sometimes I envy foreign travellers who need not mind these accursed pollen!

(Yes, I have the allergy to it.)

But we Sakura Hotel Hatagaya have a remedy for it.

This is it.

S_tea.jpg

Our special herb tea helps you in flowery days.

Even if you are free from the allergy, its soothing taste will be your favorite.

Let's try it!

Spare the rod and spoil the child

The highest temperature of Tokyo of today was 21.5, and average warmth in the middle of May. However, it snowed also in Tokyo the other day.

This seems to have been the same also in France to which my daughter had gone recently. She has gone to France for about one month while doing the homestay, and it seems to have gone to London and Belgium.

It is said, " Spare the rod and spoil the child". Our hotel helps your travel.

Snow

| | TrackBacks (0)

snow.jpg

Generally speaking, March is considered as spring in Japan.

But these days, Tokyo is very cold. And today, it was snowing!!

Snow in march is uncommon and so unprepared pedestrians slipped so often.

Fortunately, this coldness will be end on 12th of March, or so weather forecast said.

There is an east asian word, "sankan-sion", it means a cycle of three cold days followed by four warm ones, and this kind of cycle is a sign of coming spring.

Even though today is cold, surely spring is coming to Tokyo. :-)

Omoide-yoko-cho - the most direct route between the east and west side of Shinjuku Station, Omoide Yokocho is flooded with people where the local delicacy "Yakitori" (grilled chicken on skewers) and Japanese rice wine "Sake" are served by many compact stalls.
It is the best place to experience a lively but friendly atmosphere in Japanese style.

I went to watch Sumo (Japanese traditional sports) on Janually 10 at Ryogoku Nationa Musium.

My camera is not so good..., but there are many Sumo restler making circle on the stage!

It is fun to look for many many hand stamps displayed on the road in Ryogoku town, like this (this is a hand of Wakanohana, a restler) .

Sumo practice rooms are also located in several spots in Ryogoku.

During the game, I wathced the Sumo restler threw the opponent, push to outside,  and in 2 minutes!!

It was quite exciting, and the audience shouted for joy.

Abobe all, Asashoryu(one of Yokozuna restler), was strongest.

And my friend's favorite restler, Koto-owshu, was cool!

If you want to watch Sumo  in Tokyo on the next time,

the next game is 9th May, to 23rd May, 2010 at Ryogoku National Musium!!

"HANAMI" in Tokyo usually goes in the end of March in the beginning of April.

It strolls, and the feast is done while seeing the full-blown flower.

However, I like to see cherry blossoms that bloom at still a little cold time. Location of the cherry in Yoyogi Park near from Sakura-Hotel-Hatagaya blooms by a kind of the cherry named [KAN-HI-ZAKURA] in the end of February.

Anyway, please go out to enjoying seeing cherry blossom "HANAMI" when you come to Tokyo at this time. It is possible to walk from the Sakura-Hotel-Hatagaya in Yoyogi-Park.

I'm sorry by poor English.

Cherry Blossom Viewing ---HANAMI---

| | Comments (1) | TrackBacks (0)

One of the best seasons of the year is approaching in Japan! That is the time for Hanami (Cherry blossom viewing)!!

If you visit Japan between the end of March and around April 10th, there is a great chance to experience the beauty of sakura trees being in full bloom!

Here are some sites you might want to consider visiting in spring....

Imperial Palace;

Not only famous for the royal family`s residence, but it is also one of the most beautiful Hanami spots in Japan. There are about 260 sakura trees in Chidorigafuchi, an area along the Imperial Palace moat.

If you are a couple or travelling with family/friends you might want to hire a boat to enjoy Hanami from the pond. It is an absolutely breath-taking experience!

Ueno Park;

Being popular tourist destination in downtown Tokyo (Shitamachi), it is really romantic to see approximately 1,200 sakura trees being in full bloom in this spacious park. Walk through the streets filled with food stalls under sakura trees whilst enjoying the friendly atmosphere of Shitamachi Tokyo!!

Don`t miss to enjoy Hanami in the evening too, sakura trees being beautifully lit up by lights. You get to see local crowds sitting down on picnic mats, enjoying themselves eating food and drinking sake until late night!

For your information to enjoy special Hanami experience!!!
