Hi, everyone.
I'm new trainee, Masaru.
I started working here, Sakura Hotel Hatagaya from last week, and I noticed that there are lots of guests speaking Japanese beyond expectation.
Some speak greeting words like 'KONNICHIWA' and some speak like '~~SHITAINDESUKEDO...' (I would like to do ~~)
I was teaching Japanese language in India and South Korea
So I am really happy hearing foreigners speaking Japanese!!
Do not be anxious if you do not speak Japanese.
We have English, Arabic, Korean speakers.
It's me who speaks Korean.
And Arabic speaker is Mr Mohamed!!
Why don't you come and feel international atmosphere at Sakura cafe Hatagaya ?
I went for a walk around my neighbourhood this morning. Spring in Japan is so beautiful! Summers are hot and humind, so people prefer to stay inside air-conditioned rooms but during spring the weather is just perfect. We've had a couple of warm and sunny days lately, so flowers are blooming everywhere. Here are a few pictures I took.
Azaleas and all kinds of flowers are blooming everywhere!
I love Japanese temple gardens.
I really hope the good weather continues for a while. ^^
Hello again, this is Linn currently training at Sakura Hotel and Cafe Hatagaya.
Today I am borrowing Maiko-san`s account to write a blog entry.
This morning, when I entered the office of Sakura Hotel Hatagaya, I noticed something unusual.
It`s a pomegranate!
I was surprised, as this is a rare fruit in Japan.
Ai-san brought it with her to work today.
Native to the area of modern day Iran, this fruit is very beautiful to look at and quite fun to eat. The seeds pop in your mouth and are sweet, sour, juicy, and crunchy. Apparently this fruit is becoming more and more popular in everyday cooking.
For example, this is a seared ribe-eye beef salad with a pomegranate vinaigrette! Doesn`t it look delicious? The texture of the seeds are really interesting and I believe they would add a kick to any meal.
Also, today I found out that pomegranates were actually what grenadine syrup is made out of! This syrup is used to make many very popular cocktails such as Tequila Sunrises, and Shirley Temples. Who knew?
Anyway, the pomegranate was very delicious. Thank you, Ai-san!
But since all our guests were still asleep, I got them all! ;)
By the way:
Ai asked me today what things about Germany make me happy to be born German?
I think this is a very interesting question. I said, the fact that going to university is really cheap compared to a lot of countries, and that there are no earthquakes in Germany. Nature is also beautiful, but that is true for most countries I guess.
Ai said she feels happy to be born Japanese, because she loves to eat Japanese rice, and because Japan has a very low crime rate, so it's a pretty safe country in that regard.
What makes you happy to live in your country?
Some of the women dressed in traditional African clothes.
They looked so beautiful!
They checked out this morning. We'll miss them.
Thank you very much for your stay!
We hope to see you again sometime!
There's an event coming up that I am very much looking forward to!
As you all probably know Ramen noodles are very popular in Japan and there are many different types of soups and toppings. So the Tokyo Ramen Show is the perfect opportunity to try Ramen from all over Japan and find your own favorite!
Time: November 2nd (Wed) ~ 6th (Sun) between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Place: Komazawa Olympic Parc
(Train station: Komazawa Daigaku on the Denentoshi Line)
It's just about half an hour away from Sakura Hotel Hatagaya. We'll be happy to tell you how to get there if you ask at the front desk.
Btw, did you know that Hatagaya is full of Ramen restaurants? Even if you can't make it to the event you can still enjoy a big variety of Ramen in direct vicinity of our hotel!
Just ask for our "Ramen Map" that we often hand out to our hotel guests.
Ai has been working at Sakura Hotel Hatagaya for about 3 years and our guests love her, because she's very friendly and so much fun to be around. She immediately becomes friends with everyone she talks to and is very interested in people and foreign cultures. She always asks me about German traditions, like the way we celebrate weddings, Christmas ect.
Ai used to live in Canada for a year, where she worked at a Japanese restaurant and at a karaoke bar among others. Her favorite food is rice, so she considers herself lucky to be born Japanese. ;)
Ai is very good at crafting and painting. She writes/ paints all the signs and menus for our cafe.
She also loves to take funny photos. Here is a little collection of pictures I stole from her facebook gallery (with her permission of course).
One of her favorite hobbies is juggling. She even does performances at parties and festivals! She's really good. I was so surprised when I found out.
There's so much more I could tell about her. Why don't you become friends with her and find out for yourselves? (^O^)
Oh, and did you know that Ai means love in English?
Very fitting name indeed.
We love you Ai! ^^
Last time she asked me to help her, so I could learn the recipe from her, and today she let me do it all by myself! Yay!!
I still need a bit more practice, but they turned out quite well for the first time.
And this is our new staff, Ryoma! It was his second day at work today.
Look forward to his introduction post in the near future. (^O^)/
It was festival time in Hatagaya today!
We've been very busy preparing for this event during the last couple of days.
Ai was so kind to offer me to wear her Yukata (light summer Kimono).
Yoshi and Miwa dressed in a traditional festival outfit as well!
We offered drinks and food to the participants. So many people came!
They were carrying a portable shrine through the streets. Some of our guests took part as well!
Foreigners and the locals had a great time bonding with each other!
Me in front of the portable shrine.
It was so much fun! Let's celebrate again next year!
Since I'm working with Maiko today, she's the first one.
Maiko is usually a bit shy and quiet at first, but I really enjoy talking with her. She has been working at Sakura Hotel Hatagaya since January 2011, so 2 months longer than me.
She's always friendly and going out of her way to help everyone! She's also good at explaining things, so when I don't know something at work I just go and ask her. I tend to ask a lot, but she never loses her patience. :)
Maiko used to live in Canada for a year where she worked at a hotel as a receptionist and at a Japanese restaurant.
She loves white & fluffy things like rabbits and the little fellow in the photo above.
She also loves watching musicals. Her Top 3 are: Mama Mia, Les Miserables and The Lion King.
Her favorite food is natto (fermented soy beans) and cheese. She also likes to drink beer (Miwa as well as you can see below)! I don't by the way, even though I'm German.
Maiko is very easy to get along with. I really enjoy working with her because no matter how busy or even hectic things around her get, she always stays calm and has a very professional attitude. You can always count on her!
If you want to know more about her, meet her at Sakura Hotel Hatagaya or talk to her on facebook!
(^O^)/
Yesterday my friend and I went to a little shrine festival (Matsuri) in our neighbourhood. I was really looking forward to it, since it was my first Matsuri this year, and a summer in Japan without one wouldn't be complete.
The weather was great! Hot and sunny! Maybe a bit too hot actually. ^^;
I ate all kinds of food, like Yakisoba, Okonomiyaki and Yakitori. I love stall type Japanese food!
There were so many kids, some dressed in Yukata (light summer kimonos). They all looked so happy and were so excited whenever they won a prize in some game.
This is me catching goldfish with a little paper fan. This game is called "kingyo sukui" and typical for Japanese Matsuris. It's really hard to catch one though because the paper tears easily when wet. But I prefer looking at fishes over catching them anyway. ;)
There was music as well of course!
I had lots of fun! If you're in Japan in summer, going to a Matsuri is highly recommended!
From the outside it looks like an old Italian villa complete with a garden and pond.
The inside is full of beautiful glass sculptures.
There's also a big souvenir shop inside. There were so many things I wanted to buy!
If you have a chance to go to Hakone, this museum is definitely worth a visit! ^^
Last weekend I was invited to a trip to the hot springs in Hakone! It was my first time going to a Japanese Onsen in summer, so I was quite excited. I love hot springs!
I was a bit sceptical at first though, because taking a hot bath on a hot summer day doesn't really sound very appealing, does it? Well, but then it was raining all weekend and it was pretty cool as well all the time, so in the end I was actually quite happy to hop into the bath. ;)
This photo was shot at Lake Ashinoko which is a famous spot in Hakone.
We stayed at a Japanese style hotel (= Ryokan) which means the rooms were equipped with tatami mats and futons.
Dinner was served inside our room by a girl in Kimono! This is me with my friend's mother who had invited me to the trip.
This is the outdoor bath, or Rotenburo, as it is called in Japanese. When I took a bath in the evening and again in the morning there was nobody else there besides me, so I had the whole bath to myself. Nothing is more relaxing than soaking in a Rotenburo!
The food was also great! This is a small part of what we had for breakfast. Ahhh, I'm getting hungry again just looking at the pictures.
A trip to a Japanese Onsen is a great experience and highly recommended to everyone who wants to experience traditional Japanese life style and food!
The word I like is...
"One for All, All for One."
Do you remember that I love to see musicals? :)
I saw "The Three Musketeers" at this time, and this word from D'Artagnan and three musketeers.
I always learned many things from musicals and plays.
It's not just a fun, good for study though★
I learned the importance of a companies at this time!!!
・・・By the way, I could shake hands with an actor who I like, I was so happy♪♪
haha♪♪
We had a really busy day at Hatagaya today. Sometimes so much happens in only one day at work that I can hardly remember what I did in the morning when I come home at night. So I decided to try and take photos of everything interesting that happened today.
It all started with Henry from the US who suddenly started talking to me in German. I was so surpised! And he was speaking really well! He told me he used to live in Germany for a while. Too bad he only stayed one night.
This is Miwa making pickles. I really like this photo of her.
Don't eat them all! They're for our guests! XD
Then Masaya from our maintenance team came over to dispose of our old fridge. He came alone so we had to help him. That fridge was so heavy!! Even with 4 people we had a hard time carrying it to the car. Plus, it's unbelievably hot outside. >,<
This is Maiko doing all the work while Masaya is watching.
Shouldn't it be the other way round? ;)
After that I was too exhausted to take any more photos. XD
Well, not really, I just forgot. Actually I wanted to show you Miwa repairing all kinds of stuff. It's a real sight!
I'll show you next time! ^^
A couple of days ago I met up with some guests from Sakura Hostel Asakusa and Sakura House at Shinkiba Station where we got on a traditional Japanese Yakata-bune.
A Yakata-bune is a boat where people eat, drink and party together while enjoying a fresh breeze on a hot summer day.
We had a great time preparing Monjayaki and Okonomiyaki! It was All-You-Can-Eat&Drink, so we ordered lots of different stuff.
This is Tomo from Sakura Hostel Asakusa making Monjayaki! She looks really professional, don't you think? XD
Some more pictures:
The beautiful scenery of Odaiba.
It was a great day! If you ever have the opportunity to get on a Yakata-bune, don't miss out on this traditional Japanese way to party!!
It was lots of fun and so different from Hatagaya.
And last week I was in Sakura Hotel Ikebukuro for a day, which was also very exciting.
While all hotels belong to the same company the atmosphere varies from place to place. Jimbocho is the smallest hotel out of the three and has more of a hostel feel to it. The atmosphere is really international and family-like.
Irina and Maria showed me around their workplace.
Jimbocho Café on the 1st floor is really busy most days. Especially when it's hot outside Ice Coffee is very popular - and it was a really hot day in Tokyo yesterday. Just look at my face! ;)
It was interesting to work somewhere else for a change. Thank you girls! I'll be back! :D
We are happy to announce that lately the number of foreign guests at Hatagaya has been increasing steadily! Today's check-outs included guests from:
the USA
the Philippines
Spain
and Germany!
And a few minutes ago some guys from the Netherlands checked in. One of the fun parts of working at a hotel is that you meet people from all around the world on a daily basis!
Oh, and this is totally unrelated, but I really like this photo of Ai being absorbed in her work while the workers in the background are tearing down the wall next to her. XD

I hadn't told my co-workers and was so busy at work all day that I almost forgot about it myself.
Suddenly Keiko told me to come to the staff room because she wanted to talk about something. The light went off, and as I turned around Ai and Michiko (from Sakura House main office) came in with the cutest birthday cake ever, complete with candles and everything! Even my name was written on it! And they had bought some beautiful flowers as well.
I was so surprised!

(This is Janne from Finnland. He's a musician and a frequent guest at Sakura Hotel Hatagaya. We all like him a lot because he's always polite and very modest. We are always happy when he stays with us.)
(Janne speaks 7 languages. Not all of them fluently, as he is eager to add, but I'm impressed nontheless! He talked to me in German a while ago and really surprised me with his good pronounciation. Ususally we talk in English or Japanese though.)
(It seems I was the first staff member he talked to in English, by the way. Ai was really surprised when she found out, because she had only ever heard him speak in Japanese. Maybe I should tell him that my co-workers are always glad about an opportunity to use English with our guests.)
Btw, I'm going to Nagoya next week for an extended weekend! I'll tell you about my trip in my next post. Any recommendations for sightseeing or local food??

I used this opportunity to ask my co-workers what they associate with summer in Japan.
These were their answers:
Fireworks
Matsuri (Street Festivals)
Beer Gardens
Splitting Water Melons
Kingyo sukui (fishing goldfish)
I was surprised to hear that there are beer gardens in Japan as well. I didn't expect that answer at all. But that's probably just me (I don't know much about beer because I don't drink it).
In Germany summer means:
Going to the Beach
BBQs
Beer Gardens & Beach Bars
Summer Holidays (= traveling somewhere)
Lots of Ice Cream
I shocked my co-workers a little when I told them that going to the beach also includes swimming in lakes. It seems Japanese people only swim in the ocean? Going to the lake every day after work to hang out with friends and cool down a little is definitely one of the things I miss most about summers in Japan.
Of course there's much more one could mention, and many aspects of summer are probably pretty similar in both countries. What's your experience with summer in Japan? And what is summer like in your country?

On Tuesday Yukako and I - being the newbies at Hatagaya - did a tour around Tokyo to find out what the other Sakura hotels and cafes are like. This was also a good opportunity for us to introduce ourselves to the staff members we hadn't met yet.
We started at Sakura Hotel Jimbocho and Maria showed us around. It seems Jimbocho is the hotel were lots of anime fans like to stay, because it's close to Akihabara.
The rooms are very neat and pretty new. Yukako and I really liked the cozy atmosphere.
We also had a look at the cafe. Jimbochos Masala Chai is really good. So if you go there, definitely give it a try!
Next was Sakura Hostel Asakusa. On our way to the hostel we passed the famous Kaminarimon and Sensoji Shrine. So if you stay at the hostel you can start sightseeing right away, which is probably the reason why it is so popular among foreign tourists. The cafeteria was full of backpackers from all over the world. The rooms are mainly dormitory style, but look very nice and new.
Tomo and the others were quite busy though, so we didn't stay too long, because we didn't want to disturb them.
Then we went to Sakura Hotel Ikebukuro which is the biggest Sakura Hotel and has 2 buildings. The rooms are really nice and comfortable. One even reminded me of my own room at my parent's home in Germany. We had Picata for lunch at the cafe, and it was delicious! Highly recommended and pretty reasonable!
After a short stop in Shinjuku where we said hello to the people at the Sakura House main office we headed to Harajuku. There we had a light afternoon snack at the Design Festa Cafe before we had a look at the Design Festa Gallery. We finished our tour at Sakura-Tei, an okonomiyaki restaurant where we had okonomiyaki for dinner.
We were really tired after walking all day, but it was really interesting and so much fun. Plus, we had yummy food all day, which is a sure way to keep me happy! :)
Hope to see you soon at Sakura Hotel & Sakura Cafe! ^^

Last week I went to Kamakura. Kamakura is a city close to the sea about an hour away from Tokyo. It's famous for its many shrines and temples, and a big Buddha statue, the Kamakura Daibutsu. Kamakura is usually flooded with tourists, because it's just beautiful and perfect for day trips from Tokyo. It's definitely one of my favorite places in Japan.
When I went last week the weather was just perfect, sunny but not too hot.
Here are some photos I took while walking around the town!
This is Tsurugaoka Hachimangû, a famous Shintô Shrine right in the center of the city.
Komachidoori is a long street with many souvenir shops and restaurants. There's a Ghibli Store there as well.
Sweet Potato Icecream (the purple one). I forgot to take a picture of the real thing because it tasted so good that I didn't even think about my camera. Maybe next time. ;)
There's still so much more to see in Kamakura. I'll definitely go again!

It looked like this.
All my co-workers knew immediately what to expect when they saw the brand name on the box and seemed really excited. I didn't really know what was going on because I had never heard the name before, but when we opened the box there were cute little puddings inside!
The office went quiet immediately as everyone was happily eating their pudding. They were sooo delicious! Turns out Yoroizuka is a pretty famous patissier in Japan and his desserts are very popular. And now I understand why!
By the way, only five minutes before Hiroki came to work Hirotaka and I had been talking about how hungry we were, because it was 8.p.m. and we hadn't eaten anything at all since our lunch break. So his puddings really came just at the right moment. Thank you Hiroki! You saved us! :)

This is what they look like when served. They're really tasty, so if you're in Tokyo come over and give them a try! Maybe I should make some at home for dinner tonight. For someone who comes from a potato-eating country I've had too much rice lately. ;)
Just kidding, I love Japanese food! ^^

Yesterday I had Ramen noodles for dinner. There are many different types of noodles in Japan, but Ramen are my favorite. They are a bit hard to eat with chopsticks but it's fun anyway. The restaurant my friend and I went to was pretty small but the food was great. We ordered lots of different stuff and I took pictures of everything.
We started with tofu on ice, some grilled meat and Gyoza.
I had Soy Ramen and my friend ate Tsukemen (cold noodles that you dip in some kind of soup).
And then I had two servings of coconut ice cream! ;)
Of course not, but I still ate too much. But it was so delicious I couldn't help it.
We'll definitely go there again!
By the way, you're supposed to slurp Ramen loudly, but for some reason I just can't do it the way Japanese people can. Maybe because my mother taught me that it's impolite to make any noises while eating. XD

Also, kommt alle her und redet mit mir! Ich freu mich auf euch!
Anne

Do you celebrate Easter in your country? It's not celebrated in Japan but in Germany it's a very important holiday. It's one of my favorite holidays actually because it's in spring, so usually the weather is nice and the flowers are in full bloom.
In Germany it's a custom to hide Easter eggs for the children. These eggs are very colorful, so they are easier to find in the grass.
This is what it looks like when we color eggs the day before Easter Sunday in my family:
When the color is dry, we put cute stickers on them:
And then we hide them for the kids.
Easter in Germany is a lot of fun and obviously involves eating lots of eggs. :) There are many more traditions of course and they vary depending on the area where you live.
What's your favorite holiday in your home country?

I went to Kyoto for 1 night using a holiday.
It was my third time for Kyoto and was first time for spring, especially good time for cherry blossoms.
It was awesome!!
←In front of Kiyomizu-dera temple.
Because of the season for cherry blossoms,
there were so many people in Kyoto.
Everywhere
people, people, people.....
Unfortunately, the best season for cherry blossoms is this weekend.
But, I really enjoyed this Kyoto trip.
And this is my favorite picture♪ ↓

It's my first time working in an all Japanese environment, so it will probably take some time until I get used to everything. Especially using polite Japanese is very challenging because it's almost like a completely different language, but I'm doing my best, so I'm sure I'll get better at it soon. Please cheer for me! =)
Right now we don't have many international customers at Sakura Hotel Hatagaya because of the earthquake a few weeks ago and the problems in Fukushima. Life in Tokyo is almost back to normal though, so I hope we'll be able to welcome you back soon here!
Right now is the best season of the year. The cherry blossoms have started blooming and soon the parks will be full of people doing "Hanami" (= cherry blossom viewing). I'll tell you more about it next time!
