We are happy to announce that lately the number of foreign guests at Hatagaya has been increasing steadily! Today's check-outs included guests from:
the USA
the Philippines
Spain
and Germany!
And a few minutes ago some guys from the Netherlands checked in. One of the fun parts of working at a hotel is that you meet people from all around the world on a daily basis!
Oh, and this is totally unrelated, but I really like this photo of Ai being absorbed in her work while the workers in the background are tearing down the wall next to her. XD
Today is "the day of the ox." Japanese often eat eel on the day of the ox.
Why eat EEL on the day of the OX? It is said that eel restaurants put the sign up saying "it is better to eat something starts with U on the day of the ox. (Ox is "Ushi," eel is "Unagi" in Japanese.) So let's eat eel!"
Well, ox and eel are not quite the same, but eel is delicious! (to me, anyway.) If you haven't tried one yet, please give it a try!

The idea of using a "green curtain," to save as much electric power as possible
on air conditioning.
Phote is Chiyoda-ku in Japan
Green curtains not only shield buildings from the strong summer sunlight, but also cool the air as it comes
through the curtain because of the plant transpiration.
Many plant shops run out of goya seeds, relatively easy to grow, even for gardening beginners.
Yesterday we had our 4th "Traveler's Cafe" at Sakura Cafe Hatagaya!
Many new faces showed up and we had lots of fun talking about our travel experiences. This month's topic was "Foreigners / Japanese people are strange". It was so interesting to hear what everyone had to say. We laughed and drank a lot.
Thanks everyone who joined us last night! We're looking forward to next month`s gathering.
3776m high Mt.Fuji opened at 1 July. I went there to get to the summit. As it was still rainy season, most of passengers in a bus to Mt.Fuji 5th station from Shinjuku West bus terminal were foreign tourists.
I started climbing at 10:30PM.It was so windy!! Above 7th station it became like a storm.
I got to main 8th station at 3400m around 3:30AM,there still was a thick and chilly fog. As I knew all mountain huts after here were still closed,I finally gave up getting to the peak.
I don't have any photos this time. I took the video in the descending route. You see it was still very windy!
It was my birthday yesterday. I hadn't told my co-workers and was so busy at work all day that I almost forgot about it myself.
Suddenly Keiko told me to come to the staff room because she wanted to talk about something. The light went off, and as I turned around Ai and Michiko (from Sakura House main office) came in with the cutest birthday cake ever, complete with candles and everything! Even my name was written on it! And they had bought some beautiful flowers as well.
I was so surprised!
This is me with cake and flowers. It was a cream cheese cake with strawberries and sooo delicious! Japanese cakes are the best!
Thank you so much! You really made my day with this surprise!
I went to Nikko last weekend. Nikko - Kinugawa area has one of the best onsens in Japan.
At Kinugawa-Onsen station, you can take a foot bath.
One of my favorite is Meotobuchi Onsen. Here, you can enjoy more than 10 different kinds of Roten-buro. (Outdoor bath). It is about an hour and a half away from Kinugawa Onsen station by bus.
And... If you go to Nikko area, be sure to eat Yuba (Tofu based) dinner! It's delicious!
To go to Nikko from our hotel, there is a direct train that leaves from Shinjuku station. For more info visit Tobu Railways website↓

And if you decide to stop by in Asakusa on the way from or back from Nikko, be sure to stay at our sister hostel in Asakusa!↓

I am Yoshitaka,a new receptionist.I came here in mid June.
I lived in Aizuwakamatsu,Fukushima prefecture before I moved to Tokyo. It's my hometown which is 100km away from the nuclear plants.
Although the city is very famous sightseeing spot among Japanese, the tourism and farming are seriously damaged by the accidents. I hope that it will recover from the disaster soon.
I've travelled over 50 countries in this 15 years. I am glad to help tourists from other countries to travel in Japan.
Once upon a time in the universe, the stars Orihime (the weaving princess) and Hikoboshi (cow herder star) met and fell in love with each other.
However, they were so much in love that, after the
marriage, Orihime would no longer weave cloth and Hikoboshi would no longer herd cows.
The god of the universe became mad, and
separated the two by laying the huge Miky Wayriver between them. Ever
since then, Orihime and Hikoboshi are allowed to see each other only once a
year on Tanabata, the night of July 7.
