Hi! My name is Tak Yoshida, and I'm a new staff at Sakura Hotel Hatagaya(^^)

Before joining Sakura Hotel Hatagaya, I have trained at Sakura Hostel Asakusa for a month. (Some of you may have already known me from my tweets @asakusa_hostel.) Before joining Sakura group, I have lived and worked at small hotel in Hakone for 2 years.

I have also lived in India for 2 years. I have rescued street children there, and taught them music. I'm proud to say some of them have now become professional musicians.

Before working in Japan, I have studied music in US for 10 years. Yes, I'm a songwriter! I have written songs in both English and Japanese.

Please feel free to talk to me anytime, and share your smile (^^)

Best Performer

| | TrackBacks (0)

Hi!

I am Yoshitaka,a new receptionist of Sakura Hotel Hatagaya.

I was born in Aizu-Wakamatsu,Fukushima prefecture.
I went to Aizu last weekend to join an event to revive tourism of Fukushima.

Famous Japanese pop singers,Junichi Inagaki and Ai Kawashima
encouraged the people by their songs,
and a professional wrestling legend Antonio Inoki came there in the
end of the event.
(Inoki fought Muhammad Ali on the same date 26June in 1976!!)
He gave a heavy slap on the face of Ichiro Kanke, the mayor of
Aizu-Wakamatsu city to inspire his fighting spirit.

But,the best performer is not any of them.

It is......

Mr.Hiroshi Mizohata, the commissioner of Japan Tourism Agency.

He played as if a comedian on the stage.

When the event was over,

"I got a kiss of Lady Gaga a few days ago.To be honest,I really want
a kiss of you!"
He was talking to Ai Kawashima with strange dancing.
She was so embarrassed!

There is nothing bureaucratic about him.

You're the best entertainer!
Thank you Mizohata-san!

Hatagaya Guests: Janne

| | TrackBacks (0)

(This is Janne from Finnland. He's a musician and a frequent guest at Sakura Hotel Hatagaya. We all like him a lot because he's always polite and very modest. We are always happy when he stays with us.)

(Janne speaks 7 languages. Not all of them fluently, as he is eager to add, but I'm impressed nontheless! He talked to me in German a while ago and really surprised me with his good pronounciation. Ususally we talk in English or Japanese though.)

(It seems I was the first staff member he talked to in English, by the way. Ai was really surprised when she found out, because she had only ever heard him speak in Japanese. Maybe I should tell him that my co-workers are always glad about an opportunity to use English with our guests.)

Btw, I'm going to Nagoya next week for an extended weekend! I'll tell you about my trip in my next post. Any recommendations for sightseeing or local food??

two hours and half?

| | TrackBacks (0)

What can we do in two hours and half?

It's possible that we will be able to visit Tokyo from Paris in two hours and half by air by around 2050!!

EADS, Airbus' parent company, is developing a super-fast zero emission aircraft.

The model is exhibited in Paris Air Show until 26th of June.

EADS aims to complete a test model by 2020 and aims to go into service by around 2050.

It's like a dreamy idea.

Summer

| | TrackBacks (0)

It's getting hotter lately, which means summer is close.

I used this opportunity to ask my co-workers what they associate with summer in Japan.

These were their answers:

Fireworks
Matsuri (Street Festivals)
Beer Gardens
Splitting Water Melons
Kingyo sukui (fishing goldfish)

I was surprised to hear that there are beer gardens in Japan as well. I didn't expect that answer at all. But that's probably just me (I don't know much about beer because I don't drink it).

In Germany summer means:

Going to the Beach
BBQs
Beer Gardens & Beach Bars
Summer Holidays (= traveling somewhere)
Lots of Ice Cream

I shocked my co-workers a little when I told them that going to the beach also includes swimming in lakes. It seems Japanese people only swim in the ocean? Going to the lake every day after work to hang out with friends and cool down a little is definitely one of the things I miss most about summers in Japan.

Of course there's much more one could mention, and many aspects of summer are probably pretty similar in both countries. What's your experience with summer in Japan? And what is summer like in your country?

Korean Air A380

| | TrackBacks (0)

Korean Air A380 began service  between Inchon and Narita from today.

It is double-deck plane and has 407 seats. It seems to have fewer seats for its size but it is spacious.

Today, it carried not only passengers but also 10,176 botted mineral waters.

Why do you think it carried so many?

They are for earthquake victims in Tohoku area.

Thank you very much!

Sakura Hotel & Cafe Tour

| | TrackBacks (0)

On Tuesday Yukako and I - being the newbies at Hatagaya - did a tour around Tokyo to find out what the other Sakura hotels and cafes are like. This was also a good opportunity for us to introduce ourselves to the staff members we hadn't met yet.

We started at Sakura Hotel Jimbocho and Maria showed us around. It seems Jimbocho is the hotel were lots of anime fans like to stay, because it's close to Akihabara.
The rooms are very neat and pretty new. Yukako and I really liked the cozy atmosphere.
We also had a look at the cafe. Jimbochos Masala Chai is really good. So if you go there, definitely give it a try!

Next was Sakura Hostel Asakusa. On our way to the hostel we passed the famous Kaminarimon and Sensoji Shrine. So if you stay at the hostel you can start sightseeing right away, which is probably the reason why it is so popular among foreign tourists. The cafeteria was full of backpackers from all over the world. The rooms are mainly dormitory style, but look very nice and new.
Tomo and the others were quite busy though, so we didn't stay too long, because we didn't want to disturb them.

Then we went to Sakura Hotel Ikebukuro which is the biggest Sakura Hotel and has 2 buildings. The rooms are really nice and comfortable. One even reminded me of my own room at my parent's home in Germany. We had Picata for lunch at the cafe, and it was delicious! Highly recommended and pretty reasonable!

After a short stop in Shinjuku where we said hello to the people at the Sakura House main office we headed to Harajuku. There we had a light afternoon snack at the Design Festa Cafe before we had a look at the Design Festa Gallery. We finished our tour at Sakura-Tei, an okonomiyaki restaurant where we had okonomiyaki for dinner.

We were really tired after walking all day, but it was really interesting and so much fun. Plus, we had yummy food all day, which is a sure way to keep me happy! :)

Hope to see you soon at Sakura Hotel & Sakura Cafe! ^^

Kamakura

| | TrackBacks (0)

Last week I went to Kamakura. Kamakura is a city close to the sea about an hour away from Tokyo. It's famous for its many shrines and temples, and a big Buddha statue, the Kamakura Daibutsu. Kamakura is usually flooded with tourists, because it's just beautiful and perfect for day trips from Tokyo. It's definitely one of my favorite places in Japan.

One of the reasons I like Kamakura so much is because they sell icecream with sweet potato flavor there. Sounds like a weird combination, but it's really tasty!

When I went last week the weather was just perfect, sunny but not too hot.

Here are some photos I took while walking around the town!

This is Tsurugaoka Hachimangû, a famous Shintô Shrine right in the center of the city.

Komachidoori is a long street with many souvenir shops and restaurants. There's a Ghibli Store there as well.

Sweet Potato Icecream (the purple one). I forgot to take a picture of the real thing because it tasted so good that I didn't even think about my camera. Maybe next time. ;)

There's still so much more to see in Kamakura. I'll definitely go again!
